Universal Credit

Due to Lockdown, some people have found themselves with financial difficulties and unfortunately some lost their job.

In the past two weeks an astounding number of nearly a million people have applied for universal Credit, as they find themselves deeply struggling with the financial impact.

There has been 950,000 successful applications for the Department of  Work and Pensions, payments were made on the 16th of March, when lockdown began.

The government say that they continue working on helping people out who are in need due to the Pandemic. However, they say that these figures are shocking and action must carry on to be taken by the Government. Figures also suggest that millions of people are at risk of losing their job And those who are self-employed are not covered by Government schemes.

Since the Government have urged people to avoid the use of public transport and Contact with others, there has been a massive increase in numbers of those claiming for benefits.

There has been a major increase of pressure onto Universal credit, they are now consolidating monthly payments for those of a working age. The are also which replacing a number of previous benefits including income-based jobseeker’s allowance, housing benefit, child tax credit and working tax credit.

The sudden and massive increase in those signing up for Universal Credit is a major indication that the coronavirus crisis is an economic emergency for a very significant number of the public. Many people are therefore losing work and losing income which was not expected.

Since the lockdown, the government has made a series of changes to make it easier for the self-employed to claim the benefit and to ensure they will not lose out as their earnings.
